Trump Asserts Authority to Act Freely in Cuba
“I do believe I’ll be… having the honor of taking Cuba. That’s a big honor,” Trump said, adding: “Taking Cuba in some form.”
When pressed by reporters about potential measures, Trump further asserted, “Whether I free it, take it. I think I can do anything I want with it, you want to know the truth,” though he offered no additional details.
His comments coincided with a nationwide blackout in Cuba on Monday, leaving nearly 11 million residents without electricity as fuel shortages continue to strain the country’s aging power infrastructure.
According to reports, U.S. officials have indicated during negotiations that removing Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel could be an objective in the talks, though the U.S. has not publicly confirmed this position. These discussions represent the first time in over a decade that Havana has publicly acknowledged formal dialogue with Washington.
The talks follow weeks of disruptions caused by halted Venezuelan oil shipments after the U.S. seized control of President Nicolas Maduro’s assets and blocked alternative fuel supplies.
Trump has repeatedly threatened a “total oil blockade” of Cuba and warned that countries supplying oil to the island could face tariffs.
Diaz-Canel emphasized last week that any discussions with the U.S. must be based on “equality and respect for the political systems of both countries,” underscoring Cuba’s sovereignty and self-determination. He also noted that the blockade has prevented oil shipments for three months, affecting many people, including children who require medical care.
