Putin Says Russia Refuses Imposed Sanctions on Cuba

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Moscow will not accept sanctions imposed on Cuba.

During a meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla in Moscow, Putin emphasized that Russia has expressed its stance "openly, clearly, and unambiguously" through the Foreign Ministry.

"And now there's a special period with new sanctions. You know how we feel about this; we will not accept anything of the sort. And the position of our Ministry of Foreign Affairs is voiced openly, clearly, and unambiguously," he said.

Putin also noted that relations between Russia and Cuba are "developing on a generally positive track" and described the partnership as "special," recalling that Russia has consistently "stood by Cuba in its struggle for independence."

"We know how difficult it has been all these years, all these decades, all the decades of Cuba's independence for the Cuban people in their struggle for the right to live by their own rules and defend their national interests," he added.

The remarks come amid a US fuel embargo on Cuba, imposed after halting oil shipments from Mexico and Venezuela and capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, which has worsened critical shortages on the island. Washington has also signaled plans to impose import duties on countries supplying fuel to Cuba.

In response, the Russian Embassy in Havana announced last week that Moscow would soon deliver oil and petroleum products to Cuba as humanitarian assistance.
